Cultivating Emotional Balance

The Cultivating Emotional Balance (CEB) course includes scientifically based information about the nature of emotions, especially the Big Seven Universal Emotions (fear, sadness, anger, surprise, disgust, contempt and happiness), and practical exercises designed to help participants become more aware of emotions as they arise in themselves and in others.
The contemplative component is completely secular, and yet inspired by Buddhist practices for balancing the mind. Eastern contemplative traditions over the past 2,500 years have developed great insight into the nature and causes of dissatisfaction and internal distress. Contemplatives have developed a variety of practices for overcoming these causes that we will explore in this course. We will utilize the experience of emotion as a path for developing the happiness of being, for ourselves and in relationship to others.

The Little Scientist

Mindfulness means paying attention in the present moment with clarity and kindness. It means becoming aware of what is going on inside and outside of us so that we can make conscious healthy decisions in our daily lives. Often, as teachers and parents, we ask and expect our children and teenagers to pay attention and resolve their inner conflicts but what do we do to actually teach them how? They are bombarded by stimuli in their environments in the form of television, social media and video games. School expectations and peer relationships can cause further stress. It can be very challenging for children to filter and focus, find stillness and center themselves to be ready and available to learn.
Benefits
The Little Scientist program is teaching clear strategies for reducing stress and anxiety and promoting greater peace and well-being for children and teens. The fun, and highly engaging activities motivate children and teens to develop greater awareness of their bodies, thoughts and emotions. Practicing these activities daily teaches students to be kind to themselves and others, and there is a notable difference in the way that they interact with one another. These mindfulness practices create not only cohesion but deeper acceptance and respect for each person in the classroom community. The mindfulness practices support children and teens to focus better, find stillness and calm, be less anxious and happier.
These activities are “tried and true” and have been enjoyed by thousands of kids, teachers and families. It’s a great break in the day where everyone can have fun together and let loose or relax and chill out. Mindfulness creates special bonds in classrooms and outside classroom as well.
Target group
Children and teens between 3 and 18 years old, together with the entire class (which is advisable) or individually, becoming part of a group of children/teens that want to become part of the mindful generation.
